A little over 30 days ago I started a radical new sleep experiment which I wrote about here. Basically, I started sleeping for less than 4 hours per night with three minute naps taken throughout the day. The first week was rough. To say I was sleep deprived would be an understatement. The loss of mental clarity. The reduced coordination. The lucid dreams and daytime hallucinations. Ya, it kicked my trash. But after about seven days something remarkable happened.

My alarm clock chimed and I sat straight up, eyes wide open. The one-week hump was over and I felt energized and excited. My original goal was to experiment with polyphasic sleep for 30 days.

The FOMO fear of missing out on this accelerated growth path keeps me going even when the going gets rough. It turned out that I woke up much more refreshed! This is an oversimplification. In truth, REM cycles can last anywhere from 70— minutes depending on which cycle you are on see this detailed study conducted by The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

I woke up more energized from 4 hours than I did from 3. I wake up even better now that I dropped to 3. The goal is to wake up when you are coming out of a deep sleep cycle. I almost always start dreaming before I fall asleep. To achieve this consistently I do deep breathing i. Some of my clearest ideas have come in that short window. For it to work you have to commit to living a holistically more productive life. It impacts everything. I felt great afterward!

I was far more energetic and productive. I am going to start eating whenever I get hungry. I eat a couple bowls of cereal and at least one cup of Greek yogurt every day. Mostly during naps. And missing naps makes me tired and want to oversleep. You can see where this is going…. It usually takes me a day or two to get back in rhythm. I should probably get up and walk around more often. If you have back problems and want to start polyphasic sleeping, be sure to exercise often to keep your back muscles strong.

I have to make the decision every day to wake up well before my body naturally would. But in many ways it was to be expected. Before starting polyphasic sleeping I had my doubts on whether it could work for me. I just need my sleep. I am not a scientist. Consult with a doctor if you have questions on health concerns.

Getting enough sleep is vital for both physical and emotional well-being. Sleep deprivation can lead to many short- and long-term health effects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC recommend that adults between the ages of 18 and 60 years get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Babies vary a lot in the amount of sleep they need. Between the age of 3 and 6 months, some babies have 2 or 3 longish sleeps during the day, while others just have short naps.
