10. The Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42)

Scripture: John Denomination: Anglican. The story begins with Jesus on his way to Galilee. He comes to a town called Sychar and decides to stop for a rest. He sits down for a rest beside a well. The disciples have gone off into this Samaritan village to buy some food and then a woman arrives in the normal course of her day to fetch water.

In other words, this is an everyday encounter. They should, by all rights, ignore each other. But what does Jesus do? He starts up a conversation. And there are couple of things about the way he does it. First of all he begins at a very down to earth, pragmatic level. That is, our everyday conversations.

Even ones as prosaic as asking someone for a drink. He takes an ordinary situation, an ordinary conversation and he turns it around to a conversation about eternal life. And the conversation is with a very ordinary woman, someone you would never pick as a potential convert, let alone an evangelist herself.

Well, Jesus begins the conversation with a request for a drink of water, but he quickly moves on from his material needs to her spiritual needs. Or if the request for water just triggers an idea in his mind. Our Old Testament reading today recalls the time during the exodus when God provided living water for his people in the middle of the desert.

But there are other examples. In Jer 2, God accuses his people of two things. He says: "My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.

In Zech we find: "On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea; it shall continue in summer as in winter. The Woman at the Well : Christ Speaks to the Problem of a Guilty Past

By Dr. Philip W. McLarty The story of the woman at the well is familiar to most churchgoers. I had the privilege of studying the Gospel of John in seminary with Dr. Fred Gealy — at the time, a respected and well-known Bible scholar.

John ESV. Blessed Broken Given. God's Grace.

John Jesus left Judea and started back to Galilee. Oh, Samaria! That was the strange place, the half-breed place, the place you are not supposed to visit if you are well brought up! All of us had some section of town when we were growing up that we were not supposed to visit.

If you are a pastor or lay person who wants to use this to preach in church — that is why I posted it. I pray He uses this sermon in a mighty way through you. God bless you in your ministry. The audio as I preached it is on YouTube here. And there was a time in my life that I needed to hear this scripture from the perspective of the woman. So here she is, the sixth hour — noon — degrees, expecting to see all the friends she normally sees at noon at the well — nobody — you get it? Nobody goes to the well at noon.

Sermon: Meeting God at Wells

The son had brought a metal detector with him, and all of the sudden, it started to squeal. They decided to dig up whatever was buried, and what they brought out of the ground was a metal bowl, that turned out to be over years old, buried by Vikings, and it was filled with over gold and silver coins! They thought they were just out for a normal afternoon walk — but they ended up finding a great treasure that day. More than just some silver and gold coins, this woman found eternal life. Maybe this is the day that you, like the woman in this story, will find eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Some of the stories will be very familiar and others will probably be new to you. These ancient encounters are valuable for what they reveal about Jesus and what they teach us about the common problems of life. Although years have passed since Jesus walked on the earth, his words remain incredibly relevant. Times change but the human heart remains the same. We have the same hopes and fears and dreams and doubts.

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES IN LIFE-THE WOMAN AT THE WELL

Hot tears splashed down my cheeks as my new husband stared at me in confusion. I had been studying the creation story when I stumbled across the strong Hebrew word God used when creating Eve: the ezer. In that moment, God's intentions leapt off of the printed page and started a revolution in my heart. I never would have guessed how highly God thinks of his daughters. I hadn't understood how invaluable we are to his kingdom. I felt a strange combination of exhilaration and anxiety about what it would mean to stand shoulder to shoulder with my Christian brothers, instead of taking my usual safer back row seat. The tears eventually dried, but the question remained: Would I be willing to follow the blueprint I discovered in God's Word, or would I shrink back in fear?

Mar 27, - The way it's commonly told, the story goes like this: Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well and asks her for a drink of water. They talk.

Here is a modern day parable that I hope will help shed light on our gospel today…. A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night's dinner. In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples.
